March 5, 2025  – Today the Dallas County Democratic Party mourns the loss of Congressman Sylvester Turner, who served Texans in public life for more than 35 years as a member of the state legislature, mayor of Houston, and U.S. Representative. The Dallas County Democratic Party extends its deepest condolences to the family, friends and staff of Congressman Sylvester Turner and the Greater Houston Area.

Dallas County Democratic Party Chair Kardal Coleman issued the following statement:

“Today, we have lost not only an incredible leader and talent in our party, but also a genuine man who served our country with compassion. With all that we believe in at stake, the Dallas County Democratic Party commits to continuing Congressman Turner’s call for a more just society. May his legacy of leadership, faithful service and justice live on eternally.”

Representative Turner’s life of service:

Representative Turner’s career has been defined by a lifetime of service to the people of Houston. For nearly three decades, Representative Turner served as a voice for the people in the Texas House of Representatives, where he earned a reputation for his humility, bravery, and unshakeable faith and commitment to justice. As the 62nd Mayor of Houston, Turner upheld these values throughout two terms, playing a critical role in leading his city through multiple crises including the COVID-19 pandemic, and creating the vibrant, thriving Houston of today.

In January, Hon. Sylvester Turner was sworn in to serve Congress as the Representative of the 18th district of Texas. Like his predecessors Hon. Sheila Jackson Lee and Hon. Barbara Jordan, Congressman Turner’s tenure was marked by his fighting spirit and a drive to protect the most vulnerable among us. He served his constituents until the very end, attending last night’s Presidential address to deliver one final message on behalf of his constituents: ‘Don’t mess with Medicaid.’
