2017 Juneteenth Festival

Monday June 19, 2017, 2:00 pm to 7:00 pm

MLK Jr. Community Center - 2922 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd

Two and a half years after President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, the news that those enslaved were now free made its way to the South. Juneteenth marks the beginning of a long journey towards a more perfect union, and as we celebrate the abolition of slavery, we also come together, united, in our continued fight for true socio-economic freedom and equality for all.

Join us at the MLK Jr. Community Center's 2017 Juneteenth Festival on Monday, June 19 from 2-7pm. We'll be educating voters about the upcoming midterm election, recruiting new volunteers, and registering folks to vote. Sign up now for a shift at our booth!

"From Africa's heart, we rose

Already a people, our face ebon, our bodies lean,
We rose

Skills of art, life, beauty and family
Crushed by forced we knew nothing of, we rose

Survive we must, we did
We rose

We rose to be you, we rose to be me,
Above everything expected, we rose

To become the knowledge we never knew,
We rose

Dream, we did
Act we must"
