From former State Representative Harryette Ehrhardt:
A BIRTHDAY PARTY INVITATION!!!!!
You are invited to celebrate the 99th birthday of our home of 50 years. So many of you have celebrated so many wonderful things here that I just thought it deserved a birthday party!
COME BY APRIL THE 17 FROM 5:30 TO 8:30, 5731 SWISS AVENUE, DALLAS 75214, AND HAVE CAKE, ICE CREAM AND CHAMPAIGN TO TOAST THIS WONDERFUL HOME.
The home was built in 1920 by the Theodore Marcus, and we all know how much that family has contributed to Dallas. Ann Folz , who grew up in this house, continues the tradition of philanthropy making significant donating to the arts in our community. I hope she will be here so we can thank her, and her family, for their gifts to Dallas. Jane Ellison, from Denver, whom many of you have met, will be here to celebrate with us. Jane and I found this home one Thursday in December of 1970 when we were looking for a home in Dallas’ only integrated neighborhood for our growing family. Katy, our fifth, was due the next summer. We bought the home from the Van Winkle Estate and I am trying to find someone from that family to enjoy this celebration — if you know of any of them please call me. We have been very blessed by the Woodrow friends of our 5 children who have given us much joy with their presence here and for the preservationist neighbors who made this Dallas’ first Historic District. Since then, we have enjoyed countless events and you have likely been to some of them. I hope you will come to relive those pleasant experiences.
Please don’t bring cards or gifts. I would love to have any notes about stuff you remember doing at this wonderful home to save in a scrap book of this house. Just email me your stories and I will compile them for the event, or bring them with you.
If you want to honor this home with something, bring a donation to any of the groups this home has had the privilege of assisting. Here is a partial listing of groups we have enjoyed forming, or hosting: The Texas Women’s Foundation, Friends of Aldredge House, The League of Women Voters, The Dallas County Democratic Party, The Resource Center, Preservation Dallas, or the political candidate of your choice.
BUT—DO NOT FEEL THAT IS AN OBLIGATION! Mostly, I want us to have a chance to get together and enjoy, once again, the Woodrow events you may have had here, or the parties, weddings, (even several memorial services) it housed, the 4000 plus Halloween children and the preparation of their packets, the special people like Ann Richards, Mrs. Mondel, Laura Bush, Nancy Pelosi or Geraldine Ferrero you met here, the hundred or more current or past elected officials we have helped elect, or the fundraisers for your special folks or things.
You don’t need to reply, just come and enjoy and bring anyone with you we may have missed!
