2010 Special Election

Texas Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison (Republican) has announced her plans to run for Governor in the 2010 election.  If Senator Hutchison resigns her Senate seat, which she has stated she will do, there will be a Special Election to fill the vacated Senate seat.  This page is dedicated to providing news and information about that Special Election to help Democrats be informed and prepared.

Will there be a Primary for the Special Election?

There is no Primary Election for a Special Election, and all candidates from each political party will be listed together.  This means the ballot can potentially have multiple candidates from each political party.

What is the current timeline for the the Special Election?

Until Senator Hutchison actually resigns her seat as a United States Senator, there is no set date for the Special Election.  Senator Hutchison has stated publically that she plans to resign her Senate seat in November, 2009.  If she does so, this would place the Special Election some time in early May 2010.  The following is a list of events that will occurr for the Special Election.  We will update this list with specific dates as they become available.

  1. Senator Hutchison will formally resign her seat as a United States Senator
  2. Governor Perry will appoint an interim replacement until the Special Election
  3. Governor Perry will set a date for a Special Election to fill the vacated seat
  4. Candidates will formally file petitions to appear on the ballot for the Special Election
  5. Candidates will campaign for votes across the State of Texas
  6. Early Voting will begin two weeks before the Special Election date
  7. Election Day voting will take place on the date set for the Special Election

However, the Senate seat that Kay Bailey Hutchison currently occupies is not due for re-election until 2012.  If Senator Hutchison decides not to resign while running for Texas Governor, we will provide an update on this development and remove this page as there will be no Special Election for her Senate seat in 2010.

Which Democrats are running for the Special Election for United States Senator?

A number of individuals have publically stated their intention to run for Senator Hutchison's Senate seat once she resigns.  However, the Dallas County Democratic Party will refrain from listing candidates until after Senator Hutchison resigns her seat, Governor Perry sets a date for the Special Election, and the filing period to appear on the ballot for the Special Election begins.  As with our policy towards Democratic Primary elections, we do not wish to provide any unfair advantage or handicap to Texans considering a run to fill this United States Senate seat.

"We have a vision of a Texas where opportunity knows no race, no gender, no color - a glimpse of what can happen in government if we simply open the doors and let the people in."  ~ Governor Ann Richards, Inaugural address, 1991
