I’ve always been interested in the local and state political scene, but before joining DCDP as a fellow in February, I didn’t know that much about Dallas politics. After three and a half months, I feel like I’ve been exposed to more things in those months than I have learning about political science in high school and college. The best thing about being at DCDP is just the sheer amount of knowledge you gain from the people in the office around you, and the jobs you complete.
Working on the Democratic Primary in March, and the runoff in May, has been one of the most rewarding things I’ve done at DCDP. Seeing the election come together, especially the runoff, was honestly one of the coolest things I’ve been a part of. It’s really rewarding to see hard work pay off -- and finding election judges, clerks, and polling locations for more than 300 precincts is extremely hard work. But it all came together, and we had a really smooth runoff on the 27th.
There is a lot of work that goes into running a successful county party, and Dallas does it really well. The office is filled with a lot of great people, with a lot of knowledge, and a lot of heart, and that’s what I love about DCDP. The reason why Dallas County is blue is because of them and our amazing volunteers. Being a part of something bigger than me is why I am a fellow. Maybe being a DCDP fellow doesn’t sound like the most glamorous internship, but it’s truly the most rewarding. You’ll learn a lot from the people around you, and you will be a part of something that will last.
