REPUBLICANS
AND VOTER FRAUD
While
Republicans were trying to stop a form of voter fraud not found (voter
impersonation); they ignored a practice in Harris County designed to
line the pockets of Republican legislators like Dwayne Bohac. Rep.
Bohac owns a company known as Campaign Data Systems. Campaign Data
Systems is a political consulting firm that has on its payroll the
Assistant Voter Registrar for Harris County - Ed Johnson. The person
who decides who gets to vote in Harris County moonlights as a Republican
political consultant. You may ask yourself - is there anything harmful
about this? Well - in the 2008 election cycle, Harris County rejected
70,000 voter registration applications. In the same period, Dallas
County rejected 1800 applications. Coincidence?? Maybe Republicans
should concern themselves with their own questionable voter practices
before they start proposing legislation to fight imaginary fraud.
MIKLOS, KENT & ENGLAND HONORED

were honored with end of the session honors this week.
The House Democratic Caucus named Rep. Robert Miklos of Mesquite the
House Democratic Freshman of the Year. Rep. Carol Kent of Dallas was
named the Women's Health Caucus Freshman of the Year and
Rep. Kirk England of Grand Prairie was honored as "Tenured Freshman of the Year" because
this session marked his first session as a Democrat in the House.
Congratulations to each for their awards.

PRESIDENT
OBAMA NOMINATES FIRST HISPANIC TO SUPREME COURT
Another historic milestone
was reached Tuesday when President Obama nominated Judge Sonia Sotomayor
to the U.S. Supreme Court. If confirmed, Judge
Sotomayor will be the first Hispanic to serve on the court. She brings
exemplary credentials to the Court. She is an honor graduate of
Princeton and was an editor of the Yale law review. She served as a
Manhattan prosecutor and in private practice represented corporate
interests as a litigator. She was first appointed to the U.S. District
Court by former President George H. W. Bush and former President Bill
Clinton appointed her to the Second Circuit of the U.S. Court of
Appeals, where she has served for eleven years. Besides being an
accomplished jurist, Judge Sotomayor brings a life history of
achievement. Raised in the South Bronx by her mother after the death of
the father of her father at age nine; she is truly a self-made woman.
She is known as a brilliant, but pragmatic intellectual. The president
hopes to have her on the bench when the Court opens this fall. We look
forward to that day.

VOTER
SUPPRESSION SUPPRESSED
Congratulations are in
order for our Democratic State Representatives who have legally used the
rules of the House to protect our vote. The Republican voter id
railroad has been stopped in its tracks. The voter suppression bill,
known as the voter id bill looked like a sure thing. The Senate
suspended its rules for the sole purpose of railroading the bill through
the Senate. Once it reached the House, it was calendared by the
Republicans in a manner intended to ensure passage. However, our
Democratic representatives took on the challenge and using a legal
procedure known as “chubbing”, slowed down the calendar and prevented
the bill from reaching the floor. Although offered several compromises
to protect legislation calendared after the voter suppression bill,
Republicans refused all offers. Their desire to protect us from
imaginary fraudulent voters reigned supreme.
We say thank you to our
representatives for protecting our right to vote and we particularly
salute our local representatives who assisted in the process —
Terri
Hodge, Robert Miklos, Carol Kent, Rafael Anchia, Roberto Alonzo, Kirk
England, Allen Vaught, Helen Giddings, Barbara Mallory Caraway,
and Yvonne Davis.
We tip our hats to you!!!
